How to Choose Coffee Beans for Espresso or French Press

You don’t need two different bags of coffee for espresso and French press — you need the right grind. The same beans can make a sharp, concentrated shot or a rich, full-bodied cup, depending entirely on how fine you grind them and how long the water stays in contact with the grounds. Here’s how to get both right.

The core difference

It’s the grind that does the work

FeatureEspressoFrench Press
Grind sizeFine, like table saltCoarse, like sea salt
Roast levelMedium to darkLight to medium
Brew time25–30 seconds4 minutes
Coffee-to-water ratio1:2 (by weight, e.g. 18g in / 36g out)1:15
Pressure~9 bar (machine-forced)None — full immersion
Resulting bodyConcentrated, syrupy, crema on topFull-bodied, heavier mouthfeel

Grind too fine for a French press and the plunger will stick (and silty sediment ends up in your cup). Grind too coarse for espresso and water rushes through before it can extract — you’ll get a weak, sour shot with no crema.

Which one should you brew?

Choose espresso if you…

  • Want a strong, concentrated shot
  • Are making a latte, cappuccino or flat white
  • Own (or want) an espresso machine
  • Prefer a quick 30-second brew

Choose French press if you…

  • Want a full-bodied, no-equipment brew
  • Like tasting the coffee’s natural oils and body
  • Are brewing for more than one person at once
  • Don’t mind a slightly longer, hands-on process

What about the beans themselves?

Roast and origin still matter

Grind size controls extraction, but the beans themselves still shape the final cup. A darker, bolder roast like our Robusta Gold holds its chocolatey, nutty character well under espresso’s pressure and milk. A brighter, more aromatic roast like our Arabica Gayo shines in a French press, where the long steep lets its floral, fruity notes fully unfold without being masked by pressure or milk.

Our recommendation

New to grinding for two methods? Buy whole bean and grind fresh for each brew — fine right before your espresso, coarse right before your French press. One bag of Bloom Coffee, two completely different (and equally great) cups.
